Neharika Sethi’s life embarked on an unexpected path, bridging the realms of aviation, journalism, and social entrepreneurship.
Early Life and Childhood Dreams
Born in Mathura and raised in Agra, Neharika’s childhood revolved around domestic responsibilities and the St. Anthony’s Junior College, where she excelled as a monitor. Her dream of becoming a pilot was shattered due to the need for corrective lenses, but her resilience pushed her towards a conventional path.
Journalism and the Discovery of Handloom Crafts
During her college years, Neharika found her calling in journalism. Internships and work experiences at prominent publications like Hindustan Times and Times of India exposed her to the vibrant world of handloom Indian crafts, slow fashion, and sustainable practices.
The Disparity Between Artisans and Consumers
As she approached her 31st birthday, Neharika encountered a vendor selling remnants of exquisite fabric at a fraction of the price it was being sold at a brand name store. This revelation unveiled the vast disparity between artisans and consumers.
A New Adventure
Inspired by this discovery, Neharika embarked on a new adventure. She quit her job, immersed herself in the Indian textile industry, and established Tilohri, a social enterprise dedicated to empowering artisans and promoting sustainable, ethical clothing.
Establishing a Fair Price Point
Initially, Tilori sold products with a small profit. However, to differentiate itself, Tilori established its own stitching unit, showcasing the unique skills of artisans. Finding a fair price point became paramount. After careful consideration, they settled on ₹ 2800 for a century-old cotton fabric.
Transformative Power of Fair Pricing
A competing brand’s dissatisfaction with Tilohri's point led Neharika to realize the transformative power of fair pricing. Tilohri could offer exceptional quality at an accessible price, ensuring fair compensation for artisans and value for customers.
Growth and Impact
From humble beginnings with just two people, Tilohri grew to a team of 12 skilled women. Partnerships with master weavers in remote villages created a sustainable ecosystem that supported local communities. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Tilohri experienced unprecedented growth, aligning with consumers’ desire for ethical and sustainable brands.
Word-of-Mouth Marketing and Inclusive Sizing
Tilori relies on word-of-mouth marketing, building its customer base through genuine connections and positive experiences. The company believes in inclusive sizing, offering all sizes without additional charges.
Continuous Growth and Mission
Neharika’s journey has been guided by hard work, patience, and the transformative power of human connection. Tilohri continues to grow, focusing on empowering artisans and fostering a sustainable fashion industry. Neharika remains grateful for the support of her team, artisans, and customers, recognizing that together they can create a brighter future for all.
