Jessica Kumar, a resident of India for over 17 years, has achieved remarkable fluency in Hindi, a journey marked by both challenges and transformative experiences. Growing up in Chicago with limited exposure to Indian languages, she was inspired to pursue Hindi after recognizing the potential for business opportunities in India’s burgeoning economy.
Limitations of Traditional Learning Methods
During an internship in Haridwar, Jessica encountered a language barrier that sparked her determination to overcome it. Despite her initial focus on formal grammar, she realized that practical phrases and vocabulary were essential for effective communication.
Through conversations with her English-speaking friend, Shakti, Jessica immersed herself in the language. However, she faced the limitations of book learning and shifted her focus to everyday interactions.
Introduction to the Indian Society in Chicago
After completing her internship, Jessica returned to the United States and joined the Indian Society in Chicago, where she met Abhishek, who would later become her husband. Abhishek’s family hailed from Bihar, a state often subjected to stereotypes and negative perceptions.
Despite initial hesitation, Jessica was deeply impressed by Abhishek’s character and the warmth of his family. She realized that her preconceived notions were unfounded. Their decision to marry was met with mixed reactions, but they remained steadfast in their love for each other.
Learning and Adapting to the Distinct Bihari Dialect
Jessica’s wedding ceremony and Bihari traditions, a poignant reflection of their unique love story. Her in-laws welcomed her with open arms, and she gradually developed a profound appreciation for Bihar and its people.
Far removed from the stereotypes she had heard, Jessica discovered a humble, friendly, and helpful community. She immersed herself in the distinct Bihari dialect and expressions, expanding her linguistic horizons.
Inspired by her love for Bihar and a desire to challenge prejudices, Jessica launched “Learn Hindi Anywhere.” This program aimed to teach Hindi practically and engagingly, emphasizing everyday conversations over formal grammar.
Encouraging Celebration of Differences and Unity in Diversity
Through social media platforms, podcasts, and online courses, Jessica has reached millions worldwide, including a substantial following on Instagram, YouTube, and podcast platforms. Her efforts have helped break down stereotypes and foster greater inclusivity.
