Origins in Allahabad and the Aspiration to Become an IAS Officer
Varnika Shukla, a native of the historic city of Allahabad, found herself immersed in the pursuit of education from an early age. Driven by her father’s yearning for her to become an IAS officer, the traditional pathway of government service became deeply ingrained in her upbringing.
Growing up in a middle-class family where academic excellence was highly valued, Varnika excelled in her studies throughout her schooling years. Initially pursuing a path in science, her father’s observation of her aptitude led him to redirect her focus towards the humanities.
Embarking on the Challenging IAS Exam Preparation
After completing her education, Varnika embarked on the arduous journey of preparing for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) exam. Leaving her hometown behind, she relocated to Mukherjee Nagar in Delhi, a hub for aspiring civil servants. Under the guidance of exceptional mentors, she dedicated herself to the rigorous study process.
Adapting to Change and Pursuing the CSAT
Her determination was tested when the exam pattern underwent a significant change. Undeterred, Varnika adapted to the new structure and began preparing for the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT).
Facing Parental Pressure and Seeking Solace in Higher Education
As Varnika’s studies progressed, the pressure from her parents intensified. Anxiously urging her to return home, they expressed their concern that she had been away from her family for an extended period. Torn between her desire to achieve her academic goals and the expectations of her loved ones, Varnika experienced a profound internal conflict.
Seeking solace, she enrolled in a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) program at Lilli University, while simultaneously continuing her IAS preparations. However, the weight of societal expectations and the urgent need for financial independence loomed over her.
Striking a Balance and Confronting Marital Challenges
To address these concerns, Varnika obtained employment as a counselor at ICFAI University. Yet, as the pressures mounted, her family implored her to return home and settle down in marriage. With reluctance, she succumbed to their wishes.
Her marital union, however, brought with it an unexpected set of trials. Her husband harbored unrealistic financial expectations, demanding a lavish lifestyle beyond their means. Varnika, a staunch opponent of dowry, found her deeply held beliefs challenged as her husband’s demands escalated, making her feel obligated to contribute financially from her own savings.
Determined to establish a fulfilling life for herself, Varnika secured a teaching position in Ghaziabad. While she anticipated a supportive work environment, she encountered resistance from her husband, who insisted on sharing household expenses, perpetuating the traditional mindset of female subservience.
The initial years of their marriage were marked by constant tension and disagreements. Her husband’s desire to pursue opportunities abroad further strained their relationship. He appealed to Varnika to support his financial endeavors, using the argument that his success was her responsibility as his wife.
Despite her initial reluctance, Varnika agreed to fund his aspirations. Over time, however, she realized that her own desires were being neglected. She yearned for a purposeful and fulfilling life, but her husband seemed indifferent to her dreams.
Pregnancy and the Absence of Support
In 2014, Varnika became pregnant with their first child. What should have been a joyous experience was instead filled with both exhilaration and trepidation. Her husband, initially hesitant about starting a family, eventually came around. However, his support dwindled as the pregnancy progressed.
When the time for delivery arrived, Varnika found herself alone and without support. Her mother-in-law had returned home, leaving her in the care of her husband’s two inexperienced younger brothers.
After a difficult and prolonged labor, Varnika gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. While she had always dreamed of becoming a mother, her joy was dampened by the lack of support from her husband and his family.
They expressed disappointment that she had given birth to a girl and made cruel remarks about her appearance. It was a disheartening realization that her own family did not share in her happiness.
Postpartum Neglect and a Path to Resilience
As Varnika recovered from childbirth, she faced neglect and hostility within her own home. Her husband refused to provide adequate care for her and their newborn daughter. He abandoned his responsibilities, leaving her to fend for herself and their child.
Desperate for help, Varnika reached out to her parents, who embraced her and her daughter with open arms. They provided the emotional and practical support she so desperately needed.
During this challenging time, Varnika discovered the true meaning of resilience. She knew that she had to create a better life for herself and her child. Recognizing her inner strength, she resolved to forge a path that would bring her peace and fulfillment.
Embracing Plus-Size Modeling and Pursuing Her Passions
Fueled by a newfound sense of purpose, Varnika enrolled in a plus-size modeling course in Chandigarh. She embraced her body and defied societal beauty standards. Her confidence grew with each accomplishment, culminating in her triumph as the winner of Glam Mrs. India 2018.
Since then, Varnika has continued to break down barriers and pursue her passions. She has graced the stage in fashion shows, judged modeling competitions, and received professional acting training. Through her collaboration with renowned actors and directors, she has shared her story of triumph, inspiring countless others.
A Testament to the Power of Perseverance
Varnika’s journey serves as a testament to the indomitable spirit of single mothers everywhere. Defining herself not by her circumstances but by her determination and unwavering love for her child, Varnika’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the belief in oneself.
To single mothers, Varnika offers a message of hope and empowerment. She reminds them that they are not alone, that their strength and resilience inspire others, and that embracing their power and acknowledging that their children are their greatest source of courage will lead them down the path to a fulfilling life.
