Chapter 1: A Birth Defied

Dhanvantari, known as Gulabo Sapera, was born in Dhanteras, a festival that celebrates the arrival of new life. However, her birth was met with disdain and rejection by her community. Being born in the evening, at a time when her father was absent, and being the fourth daughter in a row, constituted unacceptable circumstances according to the customs of her backward society.

A heartless midwife attempted to bury Dhanvantari alive, but her mother’s unwavering determination and her aunt’s prompt intervention saved her life. At midnight, they rescued her from a shallow grave, but not without leaving a physical scar as a perpetual reminder of the cruel act she had endured.

Chapter 2: Society’s Ruthless Judgment

Growing up, Dhanvantari endured relentless discrimination and prejudice. Society labeled her an unwanted burden and a disgrace to be shunned. She was forbidden from entering her village, denied access to water sources.

Her caring father faced pressure from the community to abandon her. Suggestions were made to sell her or leave her to perish. However, he adamantly refused, determined to protect his daughter.

Chapter 3: The Power of Music and Dance

Amidst the adversity she faced, Dhanvantari found solace in music and dance. As a young girl, she observed her father’s performances as a snake charmer, captivated by the harmonious sound of the flute and the graceful movements of the serpents.

At the tender age of two, Dhanvantari herself began to dance. Music seemed to flow effortlessly through her veins, igniting a passion within her. She danced with snakes, her every move synchronized with the haunting melody of the lute.

Chapter 4: The Road to Recognition

As Dhanvantari matured, her exceptional talent drew the attention of passersby. Word spread of her extraordinary dancing skills, and soon she found herself performing at local festivals, earning a modest income.

Through these performances, Dhanvantari encountered influential individuals who recognized her potential. They facilitated her participation in the Pushkar fair, where she showcased her artistry before an international audience.

Chapter 5: A Life-Changing Opportunity

One fateful evening, Dhanvantari was invited to perform at the Rambagh Hotel in Jaipur. It was here that she met Madam Ranjit Kaur, the Tourism Commissioner. Ms. Kaur, mesmerized by her performance, offered Dhanvantari an unforgettable opportunity to travel to America.

Initially, her community fiercely protested. They threatened to ostracize her family if she left. Nevertheless, her father stood for his daughter, convinced that this opportunity could transform her life.

Chapter 6: The Journey to America

With a heavy heart, Dhanvantari embarked on her journey to the unknown. The uncertainty terrified her, but she was determined to prove herself and bring honor to her community.

In America, Dhanvantari performed to packed audiences, leaving them captivated by her mesmerizing dance. She became widely known as “Gulabo Sapera,” embodying the rich cultural heritage of India.

Chapter 7: Accolades and Recognition

Dhanvantari’s success in America not only brought her fame but also garnered recognition and respect for her community in India. In 2016, she was bestowed with the prestigious Padma Shri award by the Indian government.

This honor was not merely an accolade for Dhanvantari; it represented a triumph for all the marginalized and oppressed individuals who had been historically denied their rightful place in society. It served as a testament to their resilience and the transformative power of art.

Chapter 8: A Promise Redeemed

Upon her return to India, Dhanvantari found a society in transition. The community that had once rejected her now embraced her as a role model. They acknowledged the error of their ways and pledged to eradicate the practice of female infanticide.

Today, Dhanvantari serves as the President of her community. She continues to dance, using her platform to advocate for the rights of girls and marginalized groups. Her extraordinary journey from a rejected child to an internationally renowned artist exemplifies the power of hope, resilience, and the belief that every individual, regardless of their circumstances, deserves an opportunity to shine.
