From Humble Beginnings to the Pinnacle of Civil Service: Azharuddin Qazi’s Inspiring UPSC Journey

Azharuddin Qazi, a recent addition to the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) as the proud holder of the 315th rank in the prestigious UPSC Civil Services Exam of 2019, is the epitome of perseverance and the power of unwavering dreams. Hailing from the humble town of Yavatmal in Maharashtra, Qazi’s journey to the pinnacle of civil service is a testament to the indomitable spirit that resides within us all.

Challenging Societal Norms and Embracing Aspirations

Growing up in Yavatmal, Qazi witnessed the widespread belief that UPSC was an exclusive domain reserved for the elite, instilling fear in the hearts of many who dared to dream of pursuing it. However, Qazi refused to succumb to societal norms and be defined by external limitations. Despite the absence of ample resources and financial constraints, he resolved to chase his dream with unwavering determination.

His father’s occupation as an auto driver and his mother’s role as a homemaker placed the financial burden of providing for the family squarely on Qazi’s shoulders as the eldest child. After completing high school, he secured admission to the renowned Karwari College of Commerce in Pune. However, due to financial constraints, he could only complete one year of graduation there. He returned home and completed the remaining two years while simultaneously working for a private insurance company.

Discovering His Calling and Inspiring Influences

Upon graduating, Qazi faced a crossroads: should he continue with mundane jobs or pursue a career that aligned with his aspirations? After consulting with his professor, Uday Navalekar Saheb, he decided to embark on the challenging journey of preparing for government service.

In 2006, Qazi had the privilege of meeting IPS Abdul Rehman Saheb, whose unwavering dedication and inspiring work ignited within him a desire to become an officer of the same caliber.

The Path to Hamdard Study Circle

To prepare for the UPSC exam, Qazi realized the need to relocate to Delhi, where coaching centers offered specialized guidance. However, the exorbitant fees posed a significant financial hurdle. Through extensive research, he discovered the Hamdard Study Circle, an organization that provided support to minority and SC/ST candidates with coaching and admission assistance.

Qazi embarked on an arduous overnight journey in the general compartment of a train to reach Delhi. Upon arriving at Hamdard, he was overwhelmed by the campus and its inspiring atmosphere. He made fervent prayers for an opportunity to join this esteemed institution.

His prayers were answered when he passed the admission exam. However, the group discussion and personal interview presented new challenges for Qazi, coming from a rural background and an Urdu medium school. Despite initial hesitation, he summoned his courage and shared his aspirations with the interview board. To his delight, he secured a place among the 48 students admitted out of thousands of applicants.

Early Setbacks and Refocusing

In 2010 and 2011, Qazi attempted the UPSC exam but did not achieve success. As time passed, financial pressures mounted. He provided home tuitions to students to supplement his expenses, but it became unsustainable.

Faced with this dilemma, Qazi made the difficult decision to resign from his corporate job and return to preparing for UPSC. Understandably, his family and friends expressed concern, but he remained unwavering in his determination to pursue his dream.

Bank PO as a Temporary Stepping Stone

In 2012, Qazi joined Corporation Bank as a Bank PO. For seven years, he held various positions, including branch manager. However, his desire to serve as an IAS officer never waned. In 2017, he decided to resign from banking and once again dedicate himself to UPSC preparation.

Overcoming the Two-Year Gap

Returning to the world of UPSC after a significant gap was daunting. The exam format had undergone changes, necessitating him to start from scratch. It was a calculated risk, but Qazi was willing to take it. Inspired by a quote from Javed Akhtar, “Kyu darien zindagi me ki kya hoga, kuch na hoga to tazurba hoga,” he embraced the uncertainty and refused to dwell on potential failures. Instead, he focused on the opportunity to grow and learn.

Finally Reaching the Pinnacle

In 2018, Qazi attempted the UPSC exam for the third time. This time, he cleared the Prelims but missed the Mains examination by a narrow margin of 21 marks. Instead of discouragement, this near-success fueled his motivation. He realized that with dedicated effort, he could bridge the gap.

In 2019, drawing on the lessons learned from the previous year, Qazi intensified his studies. He worked diligently to improve his strengths and overcome his weaknesses. His efforts were rewarded when he secured the 315th All India rank.

Balancing Dreams and Responsibilities

Throughout his arduous journey, Qazi remained mindful of his responsibilities towards his family. He simultaneously fulfilled the financial obligations to his siblings’ education while pursuing his own aspirations, showcasing an unwavering commitment to both his personal and familial goals.
