Early Life and Education
Anjali Singh, a native of Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, has witnessed the transformative power of education. Her father’s career as a banker led her family to reside in numerous cities, eventually settling in Lucknow, where she completed her schooling at Carmel Convent. Driven by a desire for higher learning, she pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology from Lucknow University.
Growing up in a middle-class environment, Anjali aspired to become an air hostess, drawn by the glamour and allure of the aviation industry. However, influenced by her father’s advice, she explored opportunities within Lucknow, leading her to pursue a course in Tourism Management. Throughout her education journey, her passion for supporting and uplifting women remained a driving force.
Embarking on a New Path
In 2001, Anjali joined Equine National College as an admission counselor, quickly advancing to the position of marketing manager. Despite her success, a sense of dissatisfaction lingered, prompting her to reflect on her true calling. Her unwavering commitment to social justice and women’s empowerment led her to consider a different path.
Inspired by the belief that she could create a positive impact, Anjali left her private sector job in 2009. With a determination to leverage her skills and knowledge, she ventured into social entrepreneurship.
Birth of a Social Enterprise
With limited resources, Anjali established a jute bag production unit at her home. She partnered with Shabnam Parveen, a close associate, to embark on this entrepreneurial journey. The idea was inspired by her father’s initiative to provide jute bag-making training to women in self-help groups.
Launching the business posed significant challenges. Anjali and Shabnam faced difficulties in convincing women to join the workforce and overcome societal constraints. However, their unwavering determination to break down barriers and empower women prevailed.
Overcoming Obstacles and Inspiring Women
They visited homes, interacted with families, and addressed concerns, gradually gaining women’s trust and motivation. They offered the opportunity to earn money while supporting their families, empowering them financially and socially.
As the initiative gained momentum, the need for a structured organization became evident. Anjali and Shabnam established the Ghrit Social Organization for Social Enterprise, a platform to provide employment, financial stability, and support to women in need.
Despite initial financial constraints, they drew upon their own savings and sought support from suppliers and clients. Logistical challenges were overcome by utilizing road transport for raw materials and using their Maruti 800 car for product delivery.
Expanding Reach: Empowering Rural Women
Recognizing the need to extend their impact beyond urban areas, Anjali and her team launched a village-level training program. They equipped women with skills and machines, enabling them to work from their villages, fostering self-reliance and economic empowerment.
To date, over 5,000 women in rural communities have benefited from their training, transforming their lives and empowering them to stand on their own.
Collaborating for Impact
The success of their organization has garnered recognition from Lucknow University. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed, acknowledging the potential of Ghrit Social Enterprise to provide employment and empowerment opportunities for women.
Through this partnership, the aim is to establish a society where women possess the skills, resources, and guidance to achieve self-sufficiency.
Conclusion
Anjali’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of determination, innovation, and a unwavering belief in the power of women. From humble beginnings, she has established a thriving social enterprise that empowers women, fostering a more just and equitable society. Her journey is an inspiration for anyone seeking to make a positive impact in the world through social entrepreneurship.
