Genesis: Formative Years

Deepak Singhanwal, originating from Jaipur, Rajasthan, embarked on his life’s journey in the tranquil village of Natata. His familial roots, however, extended deep into the countryside. Raised primarily by his grandparents, Deepak developed a profound appreciation for the simple pleasures of rustic life. His father’s transferable job with the Central Government’s CGWB led the family on a series of adventures, residing in Bihar, Gujarat, and Rajasthan.

Deepak’s academic sojourn commenced at Kendriya Vidyalaya Patna, where he laid the groundwork for his future endeavors. After a stint in Ahmedabad, where he completed his primary schooling at Kendriya Vidyalaya Shahibaug, Deepak settled in Jaipur and enrolled at Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 1 for his higher secondary education.

Adversity and Resilience

Fate dealt Deepak a cruel blow in the seventh grade when his father passed away. This tragic loss left an unfillable void, particularly for his mother, who shouldered the burden of raising and educating her children alone. Despite the adversity, she displayed unwavering resilience, instilling in her children a spirit of determination and perseverance.

The Path to Discovery

As Deepak approached the crossroads of his senior secondary studies, he faced the daunting task of selecting a subject stream. Initially drawn to physics, he opted for Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics with the aspiration of attending IIT, India’s premier engineering institute.

Engineering and Beyond

In 2016, Deepak secured admission to the Indian Institute of Technology Banaras Hindu University (IIT BHU) to pursue Mechanical Engineering. His four years on campus were marked by transformative experiences and the acquisition of invaluable knowledge and skills. He immersed himself in the vibrant college life, forged lasting friendships, and honed his technical abilities.

Upon graduating, Deepak successfully cleared the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) but narrowly missed qualifying for the Engineering Services Examination (ESE), conducted by the UPSC.

A Profound Realization

As Deepak stood on the cusp of a promising engineering career, he began to question his true calling. He sought a more impactful pursuit, one where he could make a tangible difference in the lives of others. It was then that the IAS exam emerged as a daunting but alluring prospect.

Inspired by stories of transformative District Collectors shared by his mother, Deepak resolved to embark on his journey to become a civil servant. His desire to serve his country and empower its people became his guiding light.

Preparation and Challenges

With unwavering determination, Deepak declined a job offer from Adani Group in 2020 to focus on UPSC preparation. He immersed himself in the NCERT textbooks, serving as the foundational knowledge for the exam. Recognizing the significance of a comprehensive understanding and problem-solving abilities, he incorporated regular revision, meticulously analyzed previous question papers, and engaged in mock test practice to hone his time management skills and develop an intuitive grasp of the exam format.

Setbacks and Triumphs

Deepak’s first attempt at the UPSC Prelims in 2021 ended in disappointment. Reflecting upon his performance, he realized the need for enhanced revision and practice. Undeterred, he resumed his preparation with renewed vigor.

Through sheer persistence and determination, Deepak overcame the setback and cleared the Prelims in 2022. The subsequent Mains and Interview stages further tested his abilities and demanded a comprehensive grasp of the vast syllabus.

A Momentous Achievement

As the final interview results were announced, a mix of trepidation and anticipation coursed through Deepak’s veins. With trembling hands, he scrolled through the list, his heart pounding with a mixture of hope and anxiety. There, in plain sight, was his name. The realization that he had achieved his dream of becoming an IAS officer was both exhilarating and humbling.
