Introduction
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination, comprising three stages (prelims, mains, and interviews), demands a meticulous preparation strategy. In this detailed blog, Animesh Pradhan, who secured AIR in UPSC Civil Services Exam 2023, shares the preparation journey of a working aspirant who cleared the examination in their first attempt within two years, providing inspiration and guidance to aspiring candidates.
Background and Foundation
A strong academic background in school and college, coupled with a keen interest in national and international affairs, served as a solid foundation for the UPSC preparation. In February 2022, Animesh enrolled in a mentorship program that provided a structured approach and weekly current affairs updates.
Mains-Oriented Preparation (February to December 2022)
The focus shifted to mains-oriented studies during this period. Animesh studied current affairs PDFs provided by the mentorship program and meticulously prepared handwritten notes for each topic, incorporating data, analysis, and value-addition material. Regular mini tests on Sundays enhanced note-making and answer-writing skills.
Optional Course: Sociology
Despite a non-Sociology background, Animesh found Neha Bhosle’s notes on Sociology invaluable. These notes were supplemented with Nitin Sangwan’s “Essential Sociology” and test series material from coaching institutions. Handwritten notes were meticulously prepared, and numerous answers were written for the optional exam.
Prelims Preparation (February 2023)
Preparation shifted to prelims in February 2023. Core resources such as Lakshmikanth, Spectrum, RS Sharma, and PMFIS were revised. For Science and Technology, Animesh relied on current affairs and YouTube videos. Two test series were attempted to assess progress and analyze performance.
Emphasis on CSAT
Animesh underestimated the importance of the CSAT section and made mistakes in the exam. They strongly recommend giving ample attention to this section, as its difficulty has increased in recent years.
Mains Preparation Strategy
For mains, Animesh added high-quality content to their notes, including relevant data, Supreme Court judgments, and committee recommendations. Emphasizing answer-writing practice, the aspirant compiled best-case examples for each topic, which proved beneficial in improving exam performance.
Interview Preparation
Due to limited time, interview preparation was somewhat abbreviated. Animesh covered important aspects of their background, current affairs, and topics related to their optional subject (Sociology).
Working Aspiration
As a working aspirant, Animesh prioritized efficiency and time management. He rented an apartment near their office to minimize commute time, dedicating mornings to focused study sessions and evenings to less intensive revision and note-making.
Consistency and Discipline
Consistency and discipline were crucial to the Animesh's success. He studied 3.5 hours in the morning when his mind was fresh, and 1.5-2.5 hours in the evening, regardless of work fatigue.
Conclusion
The UPSC examination presents a significant challenge, but clearing it in the first attempt is possible with a well-defined strategy, consistent effort, and unwavering determination. Aspiring candidates are advised to control the controllables and leave the rest to luck and the inherent subjectivity of the exam.
